How often should I be cleaning my litterbox?

This is one of our top questions here at Urban Tails!

 

We recommend the following:

  1. Daily: scoop and remove waste from the litter box
  2. Monthly: fully remove and replace all litter in the box
  3. As needed: after emtying entire box, spray interior with a cat-specific enzymatic or probiotic cleaner to really deep-clean the box. Wipe out, let dry, and fill with fresh litter.
  4. Keep in mind, some cats need more cleaning! Especially kitties with diabetes or kidney disease. These diseases and/or the medications prescribed to kitties with these diseases sometimes increase your cat's water intake and increase the volume or frequency of urination. Consult your veterinarian for more details.

 

Plastic litter boxes should be replaced every 2-3 years.

  • Plastic is porous and can hold onto nasty smells and bacteria.
  • To fully avoid replacing your litterbox, consider purchasing a stainless steel box.
