Whether your pet's food was discontinued, your pet doesn't like their food, their food is not agreeing with them, or you simply just want to try something different, transitioning your pet's food may seem daunting. Pet food transitions can go smoothly when you follow these steps! Before transitioning foods, be sure to check with your vet if you have questions or if you care for a particularly sensitive pet.
- Make sure you have some of your pet's old food leftover. This can prevent gastrointestinal upset. Sometimes when you switch your pet's food cold turkey, it can trigger unpleasant reactions like vomiting or loose stool. (If your pet is experiencing vomiting or loose stool, please contact your veterinarian).
- Take it slow! Gradually transition their food over the course of 7-14 days. See the infographic below for our recommendation!
- Add in digestive supports during the transition. Supplements like pumpkin puree, dried pumpkin, and probiotics can help regulate stool consistency and calm their tummy during transitions.
- Use your resources! Ask an Urban Tails associate and/or your veterinarian for advice! We're here to help and we love chatting with you about your pets. Call, email, or stop in for advice
